Galen College of Nursing was established by Humana Health Institutes, Inc., in 1989 with a single purpose: to offer excellence in nursing education. Humana, who at that time was positioned as one of the largest insurance providers and healthcare systems in the country, developed these practical/vocational nursing programs in response to a severe national nursing shortage. Initially offered in Louisville, Kentucky, San Antonio, Texas, and Tampa Bay, Florida, these programs continue to address the healthcare needs of the communities they serve and are exemplars of excellence in nursing education.
In 1994, Galen, which was operating under the name of the Health Institute and Galen Health Institute, became an independent educational organization upon the dissolution of the Humana hospital system. Galen officially became Galen College of Nursing in 2005, with the establishment of an Associate Degree nursing (ADN) program at the Florida and Kentucky campuses.
As part of Galen's evolution as a college dedicated exclusively to nursing came the decision to establish its first independent Board of Directors in 2005. In 2007, Galen established its first new campus in 17 years in Cincinnati, Ohio, which offers both an LPN to ADN advanced standing program as well as an Associate Degree in Nursing program. Galen made regulatory history in 2008 when it became the first proprietary nursing program permitted to offer associate degree nursing education in the state of Texas. In 2014 Galen added Baccalaureate level nursing to it's program offerings with the Online RN to BSN. Following this introduction came the innovative Dual-Track BSN allowing students to obtain their ADN/RN on their way to a BSN. Galen College of Nursing is one of the nation's largest educators of practical and registered nurses, a success we attribute in part to our committed, caring faculty and small class sizes.
Currently, more than 3,000 students attend Galen's campuses. Galen remains dedicated to providing quality nursing education to men and women who care deeply about helping others. In addition, Galen's nursing schools employ committed, caring faculty and offer students small class sizes and extensive, diverse clinical experiences as part of this education.
