Admissions Requirements

The first and best thing you can do to prepare for your career in nursing is schedule an appointment to visit our campus and meet with an Admissions Representative. This can easily be done by calling 210.485.2222, or by filling out our online request more info form. Then an Admissions Specialist will reach out to you to discuss which nursing degree program is right for you.

Don’t wait to apply! Although Galen College of Nursing classes begin quarterly, classes fill quickly. It’s always a good idea to plan ahead and apply early.

Admission to our nursing degree programs is selective and based upon available facilities and resources in the community and within Galen.

Basic Requirements

Every applicant to Galen College of Nursing must:

  • be able to communicate effectively in English;
  • be a high school graduate or hold a GED;
  • successfully pass a qualifying entrance examination;
  • and satisfactorily pass a criminal background screening prior to the start of classes. Our clinical partners have requirements to work in a real-world health care setting that Galen students must meet. The criminal background screening fee is non-refundable

The NLN PAX is the College's official entrance examination. The NLN PAX is a standardized entrance exam for potential nursing students who seek admittance into nursing schools nationwide. See below for details on the PAX and applicable scores. Applicants may be granted acceptance into the College based upon equivalent entrance test scores on other qualifying examinations, including the HESI A2, Multilevel PAX, and TEAS. Please contact your admissions representative for more information on equivalent examinations and test scores. Scores on all examinations must have been earned within the last five years.

How to Apply

STEP ONE

Submit an application. Fill out the Online Application

STEP TWO

Schedule and pay for the National League of Nursing Pre-Admission Examination (NLN PAX), if applicable.
Students entering the VN program will take the PAX PN, and current LVNs or ADN students will take the PAX RN. If you’ve taken this test within the last five years, you might be exempt from testing for Galen. Again, ask your Galen Admission Specialist for details.

STEP THREE

Complete your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).
If you plan to finance your education and haven’t completed a FAFSA application, now’s the time. Financial aid is a detailed process, so no matter where you plan to go to school, the sooner you get started, the better.

Go to the FAFSA website, and enter Galen’s school code, which is 015924. We’re here to help if you would like assistance.

STEP FOUR

Provide proof of education.
All Galen programs require proof of high school graduation and/or GED. You will need a copy of your diploma or GED certificate.

STEP FIVE

Submit transcripts and nursing license (if applicable):

For students applying to Associate of Applied Science in Nursing Degree program and requesting transfer credits: Submit official, applicable transcripts. Please remember that any courses you wish to transfer in to Galen must be presented at this time. They will not be considered after your application is complete.

If you are already an LVN who’s applying for our LVN to ADN Bridge: Submit an official LPN transcript reflecting a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

You must provide proof of current, active, unencumbered
 VN licensure unless you begin a LVN to ADN Bridge program within six months of completing Galen’s VN Program. However, VN licensure is a course registration requirement
 for NUR 242 Medical/Surgical Nursing Concepts.

Transfer Evaluation System (TES®)

Premier interactive database of course data from institutions of higher education

In the evaluation of transfer credit, Galen utilizes TES®, the Transfer Evaluation System from CollegeSource which is the premier interactive database of course data from institutions of higher education to track and display previously approved courses for transfer. The equivalencies shown are for information purposes only and are subject to change due to changes in curriculum. Galen does not transfer in developmental, pre-licensure, or nursing courses taken prior to achieving an RN license.

If you have college credit that you would like to compare to this listing, please go here and follow instructions. If an equivalency is not listed, please contact one of our admissions representatives who can work with you to submit your courses for evaluation.
